Highlighting Prinos CO2 cross border impact

Nikolas Rigas, EnEarth’s Head of Carbon Storage, recently participated in an insightful webinar organized by Leader Associates Impact in partnership with the Carbon Capture Global Summit.

Titled “Capitalizing on Carbon: Commercializing CCUS on a Global Scale,” the webinar brought together policy architects, heavy industry leaders, and institutional investors to discuss the pathways for scaling carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) worldwide.

The discussion focused on the development of open-access CO₂ infrastructure, the structuring of bankable project financing, and the translation of international carbon strategies into predictable, cross-border value creation. As momentum behind CCUS continues to build, the session provided valuable insights into the policies, partnerships and investment frameworks required to accelerate commercialization at scale.



During the webinar, Nikolas provided an update on the Prinos CO₂ Storage Project, highlighting that it is the first carbon storage project in Southeast Europe to have secured an Environmental Permit, a Storage Permit, and a Permit for the installation of a new offshore platform in the Gulf of Kavala, Northern Greece.


He also emphasized the project's significant cross-border impact, which has been widely recognized across the Mediterranean region. To date, EnEarth has signed 15 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with prospective customers, representing a total demand of 6.12 million tonnes of CO₂ per year—more than double the project's planned annual storage capacity.


The Prinos CO₂ Storage Project represents an investment of more than €1 billion and is expected to be fully operational by 2030. The project will play a key role in helping both Greece and the European Union achieve their climate objectives, with the potential to store up to 66 million tonnes of CO₂ by 2050, making a significant contribution to industrial decarbonization and the transition to a net-zero economy.
