Dr. Katerina Sardi: "CCS is the most effective path forward for hard-to-abate sectors

Dr. Katerina Sardi, Energean and EnEarth Managing Director and Country Manager for Greece, recently participated in two prestigious events: a webinar organised by S&P Global ahead of the World Hydrogen Week (to be held in October in Copenhagen), and the 9th Southeast Europe Energy Forum, hosted by the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce in Thessaloniki, in September 2025.

Speaking on panels alongside high-level officials from across the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) value chain, Katerina underlined the critical role the oil & gas sector can play in the development and deployment of CCS, due to its extensive knowledge of subsurface geology. Energean, EnEarth’s parent company, possesses in-depth expertise in the Prinos basin, where the Prinos CO2 Storage project is being developed, having drilled numerous wells and sidetracks, and leveraging extensive subsurface data acquired over the past 50 years.

“It’s a ‘now or never’ moment”

Katerina further emphasized that the implementation of CCS infrastructure across Europe is essential to ensure the continued operation of hard-to-abate industries, job preservation, thus the maintenance of living standards. She also noted that CCS constitutes a vital tool in Europe’s broader strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

She stressed the importance of the strong support the European Commission provides to CCS projects across the continent, calling on all stakeholders to recognize the immediacy of the challenge. “We need to accelerate permitting processes, secure long-term contracts that ensure predictable returns for emitters, transporters, and storage operators, and establish financial security mechanisms to mitigate risks and provide confidence to investors”, Katerina concluded.
