EnEarth at the International Forum on Recent Cross-Cutting Developments in CCU/CCS

Dr. Paschalia Kiomourtzi, Prinos Subsurface Lead, represented Energean and its fully owned decarbonization specialist subsidiary, EnEarth, at the International Forum on Recent Cross-Cutting Developments in CCU/CCS, held in Oviedo, Spain, at the end of February.

The conference focused on “Research & Innovation from EU-funded Projects for the Net-Zero Transition,” and Dr. Kiomourtzi had the opportunity to present an update on the Prinos CO2 Storage project, which participates in the HERCCULES pilot project.

EnEarth has applied for a storage permit for the project, and a public consultation on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the first phase of the project is currently underway. Dr. Kiomourtzi emphasized that the Prinos CO2 Storage project is aimed at decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries at the local, national, and regional levels. The project will involve the construction of new infrastructure to accommodate 3 million tonnes of LCO2 per year.

HERCCULES seeks to accelerate the implementation of CCUS in Southern Europe, demonstrating the techno-economic feasibility of two full-scale CCUS chains, each serving an industrial cluster with a capture potential of 10 MtCO2 per year by 2030: (i) in Greece, driven by the cement sector; and (ii) in Northern Italy, through the synergistic integration of the cement and Energy from Waste (EfW) industries. The project will leverage the two most advanced geological CO2 storage sites in Southern Europe - Prinos in Greece and Ravenna in Italy - while involving major industrial players in the CCUS field. Additionally, the project will implement three TRL7-8 capture pilots and three CO2 mineralization pilots.
