Dr. Paschalia Kiomourtzis, EnEarth’s Subsurface Manager, highlighted the key parameters that ensure the safe implementation and monitoring of the Prinos CO₂ storage project while speaking at the conference “Underground Solutions for Surface Challenges” organized by the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME).
As part of a panel discussion with leading members of the academic community on the topic of “The Geology of Decarbonisation”, Paschalia emphasized some of the many advantages that make Prinos particularly suitable for the permanent geological storage of CO₂:
The accumulated experience of more than six decades in drilling operations and in the management of the reservoir and related infrastructure.
The wealth of available data.
The reservoir depth of approximately three kilometres, which is considered ideal for maintaining CO₂ in a supercritical state.
The proven impermeability of the rock formations, which guarantees the containment of CO₂.
The tectonic stability of the area.

“We ensure the safety of the project not only during its operational life, but also over a timescale of hundreds of years,” Paschalia stressed. She added that extensive studies, carried out as part of the Monitoring and Verification Plan, begin before the start of the project, continue throughout its operation, and extend for decades after the end of CO₂ injection. Their purpose is to ensure that environmental conditions remain unchanged, including conditions in the sea, on the seabed, in the sediments, in natural seismicity, and in the natural concentration of carbon dioxide in the water.
“Geology and Engineering, supported by extensive studies and continuous monitoring, guarantee the long-term safety of the Prinos CO₂ storage project,” concluded EnEarth’s Subsurface Manager.
