Greece is now entering the implementation phase of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, having established a comprehensive institutional and regulatory framework that enables the development of the relevant market.
Within this context, the CO₂ storage project in Prinos is emerging as the most mature project in Southeastern Europe and one of the most advanced at the European level, playing a pivotal role in the development of the CCS value chain in the region.
These points were highlighted by Dr. Pantelis Vogiatzis, Head of Commercial Development at EnEarth, speaking on a panel titled “CCS technologies and the decarbonization of Greek industry,” held during the 7th Power & Gas Forum in Athens on April 7, 2026.
During a very insightful discussion, Pantelis referred to the milestone of issuing the storage permit for the project’s first phase (1 MTPA), which is the third such permit in the European Union — following the Porthos project in the Netherlands and Greensands in Denmark — and the first in Southern Europe.
“Our ambition is for the Prinos project to evolve into the ‘Northern Lights’ of Southern Europe,” Pantelis noted.
He added that the project has already secured significant European and national funding and has been included in the Projects of Common Interest (PCI), while industry interest is strong, with the signing of non‑binding agreements (MoUs) that exceed the available capacity.

At the technical level, the project is currently in the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, while the first drilling operations are scheduled to begin within the year, marking the transition to the construction phase.
As Pantelis announced, the next critical step is the launch of the Market Test process within the current quarter, aiming at the signing of binding agreements and the final investment decision (FID) within the first quarter of 2027.
“The CO₂ storage project in Prinos is expected to become a key pillar for the decarbonization of Greek industry, while also contributing to the development of a regional CCS market and strengthening the competitiveness of the economy,” emphasized EnEarth’s Head of Commercial Development.
