A very important visit took place at the industrial facilities in the Gulf of Kavala, where EnEarth is developing the major carbon (CO₂) storage investment project in Prinos.
Specifically, EnEarth’s CEO and Country Manager in Greece, Dr. Katerina Sardi, along with company executives, welcomed Ms. Jennifer Miskimins, President of the global Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). She was accompanied by the Rector of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), Mr. Fotios Maris, and DUTH professor and President of SPE Greece, Mr. Nikolaos Kokkinos, as well as their associates.
The distinguished visitors were briefed on the operation of the Prinos complex and on the progress of the CO₂ storage project under development in Prinos.
The Director of the Prinos Complex and Director of Health, Safety and Environment at Energean Group, Mr. Vasilis Tsetoglou, stated:
“It is a great pleasure and honor to have welcomed to the Prinos facilities the global President of SPE, Ms. Jennifer Miskimins, the Rector of DUTH, Mr. Fotios Maris, Professor of DUTH and President of SPE
Greece, Mr. Nikolaos Kokkinos, and their distinguished associates.
This visit comes at a historic moment for Prinos, which is gradually transforming from Greece’s only oil field into the only CO₂ storage site in the Southeastern Mediterranean. After its role in energy security, it is now set to play a decisive role in the decarbonization of our industry and in efforts to limit the greenhouse effect and the warming of our planet.
Our collaboration over the years with both SPE and Democritus University of Thrace has greatly contributed to the safe and environmentally harmonious production of oil and natural gas from the deposits of the Gulf of Kavala—coexisting with tourism, fishing, and every human activity. At the same time, unique expertise has been developed, along with pioneering educational programs and a significant source of employment and development for local communities. We are fully confident that Prinos’ new era will continue to carry these characteristics, further enhancing the geopolitical position of Kavala and the wider region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.”
The President of SPE and professor at the Colorado School of Mines, Ms. Jennifer Miskimins, stated:
“The facilities in Prinos are impressive, and this visit was truly a great opportunity for me. As President of SPE, I visit facilities around the world, and it was an honor to be invited to Prinos.
The CO₂ storage project underway in Prinos is a very common technique applied globally. It contributes to reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change, and I see here an excellent opportunity to use a facility that is ideally suited for this purpose. There is an impermeable rock layer above the storage site that is very solid from a geomechanical perspective, and no safety concerns arise.”
The visit concluded with a tour of the offshore platforms of Prinos, home to Greece’s only hydrocarbon production for the past 45 years.
